Tradition and everyday use
Nigella has a long culinary and herbal tradition. Its oil is bold, aromatic and slightly peppery: even a small addition can transform a spread, sauce or vegetable dish.
Its role in your diet
Alongside its fats, researchers are interested in the natural compounds characteristic of nigella. Their amounts depend on the seeds and preparation. In the kitchen, we especially value its strong aroma and the variety it brings to meals.
How we recommend using it
We recommend it to lovers of bold flavours. Add a little to hummus, yoghurt sauce or tomatoes. Start with a small amount and adjust to your taste.
- Hummus and chickpea spreads.
- Savoury yoghurt sauce.
- Dressing for tomatoes and roasted vegetables after cooling.
Taste and character
Intense, aromatic, peppery and slightly bitter.
What does science say?
A 2016 meta-analysis of 17 trials reported favourable changes in some blood lipid measures with nigella supplementation. Different preparations and doses were studied, making these findings a reason for further exploration rather than a promise of the same effect from every bottle.
How to store it
Keep tightly closed, away from light and heat. Check the storage temperature and use-by guidance after opening on your bottle.
